Community mediators independent of councils could help avoid costly, litigious wars between local authorities and citizens, says Palmerston North deputy mayor John Hornblow.
Cr Hornblow admires an ombudsman-type mediator system used in parts of the United States. It combined the best of the mediation, restorative justice and ombudsman models. After the election, he wants the new Palmerston North City Council to consider appointing a community mediator, employed by the council but impartial and independent. The mediator would be accountable to a committee of respected citizens, such as Justices of the Peace. Read it all. |
